The Sweet Switcheroo
Earlier this year Cyclone Gabrielle devastated kÅ«mara crops in Northland resulting in a kÅ«mara shortage. To support our growers during this time we’re calling on the aussie cousin of the kÅ«mara, the sweet potato, so we can hold their space on the shelf until kÅ«mara crops are back.
Introducing
Sweet Potato Crisps
Available at all good supermarkets and convenience stores from 9 October.
Thanks to a weather catastrophe, a crop crunch and a helping hand from across the Tasman, the Sweet Potato Crisp was born.
From October, kÅ«mara will be taking a summer holiday from our snack offering in what we're calling a “temporary sweet switcheroo” as we work with our grower Ant Blundell of Kaipara KÅ«mara while he gets his crops back to fighting fit to continue our long-term supply agreement.

Ant has been supplying our kÅ«mara for our KÅ«mara Crisps for 9 years and he’s glad to take the help from his Australian counterparts. “It’s the right move to sub in sweet potato for kÅ«mara until we can get back to supplying properly next season. We’re grateful for the partnership and for the commitment."

“In our 50 years of harvesting kÅ«mara, this year’s weather is by far the biggest challenge we’ve faced. Since the floods, we’ve been left with 1500 tonnes of kÅ«mara compared to our usual 8000 tonnes,” says Ant.

This season both kiwis and aussie's can enjoy hand-cooked Sweet Potato Proper Crisps from our Proper Chef's in Yarra Valley and then when Kūmara is back next season, we'll go back to sourcing our Kūmara from Kaipara and making our Kūmara Crisps here in Nelson.

As with all our products, the Sweet Potato crisps are crafted with the finest natural ingredients – a variety of Australian sweet potatoes, high oleic sunflower oil and a sprinkle of sea salt. Each batch is hand-cooked and overseen by Proper Chefs, ensuring the perfect crispness every time.
